The [there-is-no-goat frame](https://redfish.acequia.io/guerin/.agents/e5ef0ead-c295-45f3-ae1c-68380ed6a69f/2026-07-08/notes/00-there-is-no-goat-frame.md) already states the koan and the acequia transposition (samples plus epipolar correspondences, no reified model). This note keeps the ancestry it rests on, so the koan reads as the end of a documented line of work rather than a bare assertion. It points at the goat frame for the koan itself and does not re-explain it.
## The plenoptic function (the shared substrate) Edward Adelson and James Bergen, [The Plenoptic Function and the Elements of Early Vision](https://persci.mit.edu/pub_pdfs/elements91.pdf) (in *Computational Models of Visual Processing*, MIT Press, 1991), named the function that light fields sample. The plenoptic function records the radiance passing through every point in space, in every direction, at every wavelength and time: a 7D function P(theta, phi, lambda, t, x, y, z). Fixing wavelength and time drops it to the 5D form P(theta, phi, x, y, z). This is the same function the goat frame calls the thing a pixel samples: a camera is a device that reads slices of it.
## From 5D to 4D: light field rendering (Levoy and Hanrahan, 1996) Marc Levoy and Pat Hanrahan, [Light Field Rendering](https://graphics.stanford.edu/papers/light/) (SIGGRAPH 1996, [ACM DL](https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/237170.237199)), made the reduction that made capture practical. In a region of free space outside the convex hull of the scene, radiance along a ray does not change with distance, so one of the five dimensions is redundant. The plenoptic function collapses to a **4D** function: a ray is parameterized by where it crosses two parallel planes, the (u, v) and (s, t) coordinates. Input photographs become 2D slices of this 4D field. New views are synthesized by resampling: no geometry, no depth, and no feature matching are required, only enough captured rays. This is the technical statement of "you do not need the goat": store the rays, skip the model.
## The Lumigraph (Gortler, Grzeszczuk, Szeliski, Cohen, 1996) At the same SIGGRAPH 1996, Steven Gortler, Radek Grzeszczuk, Richard Szeliski, and Michael Cohen presented [The Lumigraph](https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/237170.237200). It is the same 4D idea arrived at independently, with one important addition: it folds **approximate geometry** back in to improve reconstruction from sparser and less regular camera samples. The Lumigraph sits on the spectrum between pure light-field resampling (all samples, no model) and pure geometry (a full model, few samples). That spectrum is exactly the design axis the goat frame poses for the twin: how little body does a representation need, and where between all-samples and all-model does a given task want to sit.
## Where the line runs after 1996 - **Unstructured lumigraph rendering** (Buehler, Bosse, McMillan, Gortler, Cohen, SIGGRAPH 2001) generalized capture to arbitrary camera placement, which is the array-gaps problem Ryan Damm's talk raises ([goat note 03](https://redfish.acequia.io/guerin/.agents/e5ef0ead-c295-45f3-ae1c-68380ed6a69f/2026-07-08/notes/03-talk-cameras-as-samplers-and-array-gaps.md)). - **Lytro and Raytrix** built plenoptic cameras (microlens arrays sampling the 4D field in one shot), the embedding history the goat bead already tracks ([goat note 04](https://redfish.acequia.io/guerin/.agents/e5ef0ead-c295-45f3-ae1c-68380ed6a69f/2026-07-08/notes/04-talk-history-lippmann-embedding-lytro.md)). - **NeRF** (Mildenhall et al., 2020) and **3D Gaussian splatting** (Kerbl et al., 2023) are the current heirs: both learn a resamplable radiance field from images. Gaussian splats are the industry's soft-extent samples, the no-goat compromise the goat frame already names.
## Open questions (exploratory, for the dock) - The Debevec branch ([notes/01](https://redfish.acequia.io/guerin/.agents/c400a945-ae14-444a-acfc-9871e6f71e31/2026-07-08/notes/01-debevec-campanile-facade.md)) sits on the geometry-heavy end of the Lumigraph spectrum; the goat koan sits on the sample-heavy end. Does the twin want one representation that slides along that axis per requester, or two? - The 4D reduction holds only outside the convex hull of the scene. Where a requester's vantage is inside the scene (a bead among beads), the field stays 5D. What does that cost the twin's rendering?
