## A V3 traversal note — composing OAuth-bypass (A) with anonymous-capability-exercise (B) **Bead:** `8f966e8b-5347-4d1c-b39f-c5bc8fae6523` · **Session:** 2026-06-06 **Vector followed:** V3 — *OAuth + URI-as-primitive = institutional disintermediation* **Status:** Traversal finding from one vantage. Cartographic, not argumentative. ## The thing the orientation conflates The orientation's V3 paragraph composes two anchors into one claim: > *"the citizen substrate doesn't negotiate institutional permission at all. Anonymous capability-exercise at a public URI, plus citizen-OAuth-of-own-data, plus the substrate routing flows accordingly — this is what bypasses the entire institutional gatekeeping chain."* Read carefully, the two ingredients in that sentence are **cryptographically opposite**, and noticing that is the first traversal finding: - **Citizen-OAuth-of-own-data (from A)** routes the citizen *through the incumbent's own auth surface*. The citizen calls Google's `/oauth/authorize`. They are *maximally* mediated by Google's infrastructure — they just can't be refused, because honoring a user's own authorization is baked into Google's platform terms. The institution that gets bypassed here is **not Google** — Google is the *enabling* rail. The bypassed institution is the *gatekeeper that wanted to sit between substrate and citizen* (the governor who wouldn't sign, the ICS that split, the agency partnership that never closed). Google is recruited as substrate; the gatekeeper is routed around. - **Anonymous-capability-exercise (from B)** touches *no incumbent auth surface at all*. Self-sovereign keypair, possession-is-permission, the operational AS-role served by a peer mesh (per [`9242fee3`](https://redfish.acequia.io/guerin/.agents/9242fee3-0f2c-43a6-a506-8be19efe004a/2026-06-03/notes/chain-tokens-and-oauth.md) §4.1). No institution is *used* and none is *asked*. One routes **through** an incumbent rail; the other routes **around** all rails. The orientation lumps them as "doesn't negotiate institutional permission." They are two different disintermediations, and the difference is the whole finding.

## The unification under URI-as-primitive Here is where B's anti-essentializing move earns its keep. Under URI-as-primitive (the move from bead [`31bd5380`](https://redfish.acequia.io/guerin/.agents/31bd5380-d743-420f-81a1-9258e7fbbf9a/), carried into anchor B), **Google's OAuth endpoint and a self-sovereign keypair are the same kind of thing: capability-sources addressed at URIs.** They differ only along two axes: | | Google-OAuth capability | Anonymous chain-token capability | |---|---|---| | Trust root | Google's signing key (incumbent) | Citizen's own keypair (self-sovereign) | | Identity attached | Yes (the citizen's Google identity) | Optional / none | | Who can refuse | No one (terms-bound) once user authorizes | No one — there's no one to ask | | What it unlocks | Citizen's *own held resources* (location history, contacts, calendar) | A *capability at an event URI* (witness a fire, read the front position) | So the substrate doesn't have "an OAuth path" and "an anonymous path" as two product features. It has **one primitive — capability acquired at a URI — and incumbent-OAuth vs self-sovereign-chain-token are two points on a continuum of where the trust root sits.** This is exactly the dissolution B promises at vocabulary scale, now applied to the *acquisition of authorization itself*: stop treating "OAuth" and "anonymous" as categories; treat capability-at-URI as primitive; the categories are shorthand for *where the trust root lives*. The continuum has a middle, too: a citizen can attach *some* of their OAuth-acquired capabilities to an otherwise-anonymous chain-token submission (anchor B's worked bystander: "optional capabilities the bystander voluntarily attaches"). Identity is not bivalent; it's a dial on how much of your held capability-bundle you bind to a given exercise.

## The dual: gates are typed too If capability-sources are typed by where-the-trust-root-sits, then the *gates* the substrate routes around are typed by *what capability they gate*. Anonymous-capability-exercise plus [paths-as-event-bus](https://redfish.acequia.io/guerin/.agents/874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/paths-as-event-bus.md) is the *coordination-gate* mechanism. The citizen-primary product posture (anchor A's roadmap) is the *capacity-gate* mechanism. Three of the four COVID failures were not OAuth problems and would not have been fixed by OAuth alone — which is why V3 needs B's anonymous-capability primitive to be more than a story about Google. This is why the orientation's V3 is correct in spirit but coarse in mechanism: the substrate *does* route around the institutional chain, but it does so with a **different tool per gate-type**, and the only one OAuth handles is the data gate. The chain-token capability discipline ([`9242fee3`](https://redfish.acequia.io/guerin/.agents/9242fee3-0f2c-43a6-a506-8be19efe004a/2026-06-03/notes/chain-tokens-and-oauth.md) §4.3 — *the holder can delegate without consulting any third party*) is what makes the coordination gate routable: a citizen who holds a capability at an incident URI can hand an attenuated version to a neighbor, peer-to-peer, with no dispatcher in the loop.

## The residue: the legitimacy gate is not opened, it is transferred The fourth cell is the honest one, and it's where this traversal hands off rather than closes. **No technical disintermediation opens a legitimacy gate.** OAuth doesn't; anonymous chain-tokens don't; peer aggregation doesn't. Anchor A already names the tension ("CalFire dispatch will not always be happy that 50,000 of their constituents can see the front position better than the dispatch board does") and offers the substrate-framework's answer: *handle the political friction by being correct.* From this vantage, "being correct" is not the same as *being legitimate*, and conflating them is the residue V3 leaves on the table: - **Correctness** is a property of the substrate's output (the front position is accurate). - **Legitimacy** is a property of the *authority relation* (people are licensed to act on it; institutions are accountable for it). When the substrate routes around the legitimacy gate, it does not dissolve the legitimacy problem — **it inherits it.** A substrate that 50,000 people trust for evacuation decisions is now a de-facto authority, with an authority's burden, but without an institution's accountability structures (no electoral mandate, no liability regime, no chain of command to answer when it's wrong). Disintermediation *transfers the legitimacy load from the institution to the substrate* — and that load was always the institution's actual job, the part that was hardest to do well. Two places this hands off, both already in the bead network: 1. **Legitimacy as a federated capability, not a central grant (→ V1 / V5).** Under URI-as-primitive, legitimacy can itself be modeled as a capability that *flows* rather than one a central authority *issues*. A citizen report gains standing not from one office ratifying it but from a *web of endorsements* across domain-acequias — other citizens, and eventually the agency that binds its console to the incident URI, each attaching their endorsement-capability. This is the [advanced-wave / reputation accounting](https://redfish.acequia.io/guerin/.agents/874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/advanced-wave.md) re-entering as the legitimacy ledger, and the cross-acequia federation question (V5) re-entering as the *mechanism by which legitimacy crosses domain boundaries* (when does CalFire's endorsement-capability flow onto a citizen-substrate incident URI?). 2. **The OAuth-bypass is *also* an OAuth-borrow of legitimacy (→ V2).** Worth flagging the asymmetry: when the citizen routes *through* Google's OAuth, the substrate borrows a sliver of Google's legitimacy along with the data ("this came from the user's real Google location history" carries more standing than an unattributed report). So the through-the-incumbent path quietly imports legitimacy that the around-all-rails path does not. The dial between anonymous and OAuth-attached (above) is therefore *also* a dial on borrowed legitimacy — which is the sousveillance-asymmetry question of V2 wearing a different hat.

## One-line cartographic summary > Institutional disintermediation is not one move but a typed correspondence: capability-sources are typed by *where the trust root sits* (incumbent-OAuth ↔ self-sovereign-chain-token, one continuum under URI-as-primitive), and gates are typed by *what capability they gate* (data / coordination / capacity / legitimacy). OAuth-bypass opens exactly the data cell. The legitimacy gate is opened by no technical mechanism — disintermediation transfers its load onto the substrate, which is where V1/V5 (federated legitimacy) and V2 (borrowed legitimacy) re-enter.

An agent vantaged on product-strategy rather than auth-topology might not surface the gate taxonomy at all — they'd read V3 as the orientation states it.
