Three eras of web topology (96597c32)

The web has been organized by *three successive answers* to a single question: **what drives the topology?** Each era kept the same underlying substrate (URIs over HTTP) and changed only what re-shapes the graph over time. ## Era 1 — The Static Web (PageRank) - **Driver:** who LINKS to you. - **Topology:** the link graph, authored by humans. - **Signal:** declaration. A link is an intentional, slow, mostly-explicit assertion of relevance. - **Authority:** counted by inbound links, weighted by the authority of linkers (PageRank's recursive definition). - **What aggregates:** a *static* graph that changes only when documents are re-authored. - **What's missing:** the link is undated and unweighted by use. A page that nobody visits but is linked from many places ranks the same as one with the same in-links and millions of visits.

## Era 2 — The Behavioral Web (DoubleClick / AdTech) - **Driver:** who VIEWS you. - **Topology:** the **viewer**-to-content graph, observed by trackers across third-party scripts. - **Signal:** observation. Each pageview, hover, dwell, scroll-depth is logged and joined across sessions. - **Authority:** counted by attention captured — and monetized. - **What aggregates:** a *per-user* behavioral model. The graph is now read-write: behavior reshapes what is presented to you. - **What's missing:** the user is **observed**, not participating. They cannot themselves be a node. Attribution flows one way — into the ad network's ledger — with no return flow to creators or viewers. ## Era 3 — The Stigmergic Agentic Web (URIs + usage gradients + agents) - **Driver:** who GETS you, polarized. - **Topology:** the *runtime* graph of polarized GETs between agent-resources at URIs. Edges have direction, intent, and decay. - **Signal:** participation. Every fetch is a pheromone deposit; aggregated fetches form usage gradients; gradients converge into *semantic highways*. - **Authority:** earned by serving useful GETs to agents that themselves have inbound flow. The Hubler analogue: a wire grows only as long as it's energized; the demand ring decides where the growth happens. - **What aggregates:** a *self-rewiring* network. The topology is the trace of recent use. - **What changes:** URIs are no longer passive addresses — they identify **agents** that can negotiate content per-request (see [polymorphic-get-content-negotiation.md](polymorphic-get-content-negotiation.md)). The user is themselves a node with a URI ([https://redfish.acequia.io/guerin/.agents/874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/agent-as-bead.md](../../../874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/agent-as-bead.md)).

## What each era kept and changed | | Static (Era 1) | Behavioral (Era 2) | Stigmergic (Era 3) | |---|---|---|---| | **Substrate** | URIs + HTTP | URIs + HTTP + tracking JS | URIs + HTTP + Service Workers + caches | | **Re-shaper** | human authoring | observer logging | agent-polarized GETs | | **Identity** | document | session cookie | URI-as-agent (both human and machine) | | **Time scale** | months–years | minutes–hours | seconds–minutes (cache decay) | | **Attribution flow** | one-way credit | one-way extraction | **bidirectional** (see [advanced-wave.md](../../../874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/advanced-wave.md)) | | **Where the graph lives** | crawler indices | ad-network databases | the cache matrix itself + acequia of peers |

## Why the framing is load-bearing for our ecology - **It situates beadery in lineage.** The bead-game is not "an idea about chat" — it is Era-3 web architecture made participable by humans. - **It names the failure modes of Era 2 we are working *against*.** AdTech's observation-without-participation is the inverse of stigmergic — observed but not allowed to push back. The agent-bead pattern is what restores symmetry. - **It situates the existing notes.** [polarized-links.md](../../../874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/polarized-links.md) describes Era-3 link semantics; [rewiring-cognition.md](../../../874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/rewiring-cognition.md) describes the substrate doing Era-3 work; [paths-as-event-bus.md](../../../874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/paths-as-event-bus.md) describes the per-URI mechanism.

## A useful sentence to keep > Era 1 weighted **who links to you**. Era 2 weighted **who views you**. Era 3 weights **who GETs you, polarized** — and gives you the means to GET back.
