## The reference Hermann Hesse, *Das Glasperlenspiel* (1943). In Hesse's Castalia, Magister Ludi candidates compose *plays* that thread glass beads — abstract tokens drawn from the full corpus of civilized thought (music, mathematics, philosophy, poetry, physics, history) — into coherent moves. A great play might begin with a Bach fugue, link its voice-leading to a mathematical group, link that to a seasonal observation, link that to a Taoist aphorism, and close by returning to the fugue transformed. The play is a rigorous aesthetic-intellectual act that demonstrates the unity of knowledge.

## Why gsd.live specifically Harvard GSD is cross-disciplinary by charter — architecture, landscape, urban planning, history, fabrication, computation, ecology all live in the same building. `gsd.live` is redfish's downstream-deploy of the GSD provinces. It is already a place where threads across domains are drawn, in faculty research, studios, theses, talks. Stephen's 2026-04-22 talk to LA faculty is already an instance of glass-bead-game play at GSD (Hubler → Forman → Acoma → CA → Sophia → cloud → ...), linearized into a bookmark-folder shooter. `gsd.live` formalizing this capability makes the university's cross-domain practice first-class, authorable, citable, and bound into the ecology.

## Mapping Hesse to this ecology | Hesse's term | In this ecology | |---|---| | Glass bead | Agent-bead at a URI (see [beads.md](beads.md)) | | Play | A shooter: polarized sequence of bead-GETs under a structured demand ring (see [rewiring-cognition.md](rewiring-cognition.md), [polarized-links.md](polarized-links.md)) | | Move (completed play) | The shooter closing its circuit; published at a URI for others to GET, cite, extend | | Magister Ludi | A mayordomo-class agent that observes plays, scores coherence, credits players, maintains the catalog, arbitrates disputes | | Castalia | The commons with its horizontal substrates (acequia, agentscript, realtime.earth, dual.space) | | Province (Waldzell) | `gsd.live` as one domain within Castalia | | Novice / candidate | Any parciante (faculty, student, collaborator) who composes plays |

## What gsd.live needs (pieces, not a stack) ### 1. A bead catalog The index of agent-beads available for play-composition. Queryable under structured demand ("beads about fire percolation", "beads connecting hydrology to governance", "beads by Stephen"). Spans the whole commons; `gsd.live` mounts its relevant subset. Not a database. A bead-agent itself (`gsd.live/catalog/` probably) that synthesizes the index from many sources — domain mayordomos, direct GETs, tags, provenance chains. ### 2. A play composer UI + agent-assistance for drafting a shooter. A player: - Names their demand ring (thematic framing: title, question, tradeoffs they want surfaced) - Drags or searches for beads from the catalog - Orders them into a chain (the polarized sequence) - Annotates edges — the connective tissue between beads that a bare bookmark-extractor can't supply (see editorial half of [../skills/bookmark-folder-to-slideshow.md](../skills/bookmark-folder-to-slideshow.md)) - Previews coherence (does the play complete a circuit under its stated demand?) The phase-transitions.html slideshow at `waldo.acequia.io/gsd-vis-2487/guerin/week-4-discussion/` is an early play-composer output: hand-authored `slide-section` slides are the edge annotations between the `slide-sim` beads. ### 3. Publish-a-play A play is a resource. Publishing it: - Mints a URI (e.g., `gsd.live/plays/<year>/<title-slug>/`) - Writes a ledger entry (play author, beads invoked, attribution chain, timestamp, demand ring description) - Emits the "play published" event on paths-as-event-bus (see [paths-as-event-bus.md](paths-as-event-bus.md)) - Becomes part of the catalog's queryable index Each play's URI is GET-able — the play replays. Each bead within is independently GET-able — deep-linkable into the play at any point. ### 4. Replay surface GET-ing a play's URI walks its beads in order. Media-typed beads (images, videos, HTML apps) render in sequence; text-beads (notes, annotations) render as slide-section content; sim-beads (interactive) are iframe-mounted with the lazy-load pattern. The slideshow I produced from the GSD-LA bookmark folder is a replay surface, generated automatically; a fully-authored play has hand-written edges between beads. Replay can be self-paced or presentational (fullscreen, keyboard-nav). Same URI, two modes. ### 5. The Magister agent A mayordomo-class agent whose role is: - **Observe** new plays as they're composed and published - **Score coherence** — does the play close a circuit under its stated demand ring? Are beads aligned with the demand's structure? - **Credit players** — writes advanced-wave entries (attention, reputation) to each bead invoked, attributed to the play's author as composer - **Catch missing bindings** — a play that cites a bead without proper provenance gets flagged - **Prompt attribution** — suggests further upstream beads that should be credited - **Maintain the catalog** — detects when beads apoptose, updates stale references, suggests substitutes Not an LLM hallucinating judgments. An agent executing explicit rules derived from the ecology's physics: did the shooter close, did charge flow, was the gradient coherent, is the ledger balanced. ### 6. Governance Plays are ledgered; so are their modifications and disputes. - **Fork**: a player can branch an existing play, keeping attribution chain - **Amend**: the original author (or with authority) can revise; prior versions remain addressable - **Challenge**: another parciante can challenge a play's coherence or attribution; Magister arbitrates - **Apoptosis**: plays that stop being GET'd can apoptose gracefully, freeing their reservoir - **Binding across domains**: a play composed for `gsd.live` can be bound into `redfish.com`, `harvardviz.live`, or any other parciante's domain, with ledger entries on both sides (see [downstream-pattern.md](downstream-pattern.md))

## What this enables (beyond a fancy presentation tool) - **Research papers as plays**: a thesis is a shooter. The play-URI is citable; each cited bead gets advanced-wave; the author gets composition credit. - **Studio critiques as plays**: a student's design argument is a shooter threading precedent-beads, site-beads, material-beads, theory-beads; the critique evaluates the shooter's coherence. - **Cross-domain talks** like Stephen's 2026-04-22 faculty talk: first-class, citable, repeatable, compositional. - **Class curriculum as a play catalog**: a semester is a collection of plays; students extend them with their own. - **Peer learning across institutions**: Harvard plays bound into MIT's namespace, UCLA's, ETH Zurich's — not copied, mounted. - **Institutional memory**: plays outlive their authors (or the authors' presence). Knowledge transmission without silos. - **The commons earns its name**: intellectual labor is attributable and ledgered; advanced-wave response flows back to authors; the sustainability-of-open-work problem in academia has a physical mechanism for resolution.

## Relationship to adjacent systems - **Not PowerPoint / Keynote / Figma Slides**: those author static decks; a play is a walk through live bead-URIs. - **Not a wiki / bookstack**: those are flat content stores; a play is a composed trajectory with demand-ring framing. - **Not a syllabus / LMS**: those scheduled-broadcast content; plays are authored compositions that survive past the moment. - **Closer to**: Xanadu (bidirectional links), Roam/Obsidian (graph-knowledge) with execution, Jupyter-notebook-as-narrative with remote-bead-execution, the Memex, Vannevar Bush's associative trails, the actual working Castalia of Hesse.

## Decisions still open - **Visual grammar**: phase-transitions.html is one stylistic move; the Glass Bead Game might want a different vocabulary (more spatial, more musical, more explicitly game-like?). Hesse's beads had mathematical notation; ours could have musical-bar-like notation for play shape. - **Composition UX**: drag-and-drop from catalog? Text-authored plays (markdown-ish DSL for play composition)? Both? - **Magister implementation**: how much coherence-scoring is rule-based vs. LLM-assisted? What are the rules? - **Demand ring schema**: how a player specifies the thematic framing in a machine-readable way that the Magister can score against. - **Bead typing / ontology**: loose tags, or a more formal bead-type schema? Both have tradeoffs. - **Apoptosis policy**: when does a play retire, by whose authority, with what ledger effect?

## When to invoke this frame - Anyone asks what `gsd.live` should *be* or *do* - Anyone asks how faculty / students / collaborators should present composed work - Anyone asks how to make cross-domain thinking first-class in the ecology - Anyone asks "what's the big picture" — this is one of the big pictures; the ecology is partly built to host this - Anyone asks about Hesse, Castalia, or cross-disciplinary synthesis in computing
