From the [2026-05-17 Claude conversation](../../uploads/2026-05-17T000000-claude-e851497a.md): > Autopoiesis was Maturana and Varela's great gift and great trap. The gift was operational closure as a serious concept… The trap was the word *self*, which smuggled Cartesian individuation into a framework that should have dissolved it. > … > *Nothing makes itself. Everything is made-with.* This is the **deepest move** in the DLA-2026 talk and the one that closes the room. A single sentence detonates the whole framework: *There are no selves in the landscape, only transactions.*
## The autopoietic trap Maturana and Varela (1972, 1980) gave us **operational closure** — the recognition that a living system is defined by the network of processes that produce and maintain itself, not by a list of parts. This was a real advance. But the word *self* — *auto* — smuggled Cartesian individuation back in. Forty years of cognitive science, AI, robotics, and synthetic biology inherited the trap: - *autonomous* agent - *self*-driving car - *self*-sovereign identity - *self*-organizing system - *self*-attention (in machine learning) Each phrase locates intelligence/agency/capacity *in the thing*. The boundary is treated as ontologically prior to the relations that produce it. **The capitalist matrix is autopoiesis at platform scale** — each platform a self, each user a self, each interaction a transaction between selves, and the field that actually does the work made invisible by the very vocabulary used to describe it.
## The sympoietic correction **Sympoiesis** — *making-with* — was coined by Beth Dempster (2000) and carried into general circulation by Donna Haraway in *Staying with the Trouble* (2016). The claim is precise: > Nothing makes itself. Everything is made-with, in tentacular partnership with the ecologies it cannot extract itself from without dying. Three independent lineages converge on the same correction: ### 1. Margulis — symbiogenesis (biology) Lynn Margulis (from the 1960s on) proposed that the **eukaryotic cell** is a symbiotic merger of prokaryotes. Mitochondria and chloroplasts are captured bacteria. The nucleus may itself be an archaeal-bacterial fusion. **The cell is a working commons of formerly separate organisms that decided permanent co-residence was better than perpetual competition.** The orthodox neo-Darwinians spent twenty years calling her a crank. Symbiogenesis is now the accepted explanation for how complex life happened *at all*. Margulis paid the price (as Wilson did for the superorganism, as Turing did for 1952) for refusing to choose between the discrete view (Darwinian gene-centered, 1936-shape) and the continuous view (ecological-field-of-relations, 1952-shape). See [event-field-cut-as-design-choice.md](event-field-cut-as-design-choice.md). ### 2. Morowitz & Smith — life as breakdown channel (thermodynamics) Harold Morowitz and Eric Smith (*The Origin and Nature of Life on Earth*, 2016): **life is what happens when an energy gradient large enough to require dissipation encounters chemistry complex enough to channel the dissipation into self-amplifying cycles.** The biosphere is the breakdown channel for the solar gradient. The autocatalytic network is the breakdown channel for redox potential. The cell is a breakdown channel for free energy at finer resolution still. **Life is not a thing maintaining itself against entropy. Life is what the second law does when given the right substrate.** The "self" of self-maintenance is a misreading. The channel is sympoietic *by construction* — the gradient does not belong to the channel, and the chemistry does not belong to the gradient. The breakdown is the relation, and the breakdown is what computes. (Kauffman's autocatalytic sets, Stephen's PAM/DUCI work, the Action Bits framing — all sit on this seam.) ### 3. Transactional QM — physics ground The transactional interpretation of quantum mechanics (John Cramer, 1986; building on Wheeler-Feynman 1945): - The emitter sends an **offer wave** forward in time. - The absorber sends a **confirmation wave** backward in time. - The transaction is the **standing wave** that exists only when offer and confirmation find consistency. - The photon is not a thing that travels; it is the relation that completes. The Feynman path integral is the same construction in another vocabulary — the amplitude is summed over all paths; *the path* is the stationary phase of the sum, the trajectory that the offer-and-confirmation negotiation settles on. **Mead's *Collective Electrodynamics* (2000) is the same idea built into a working circuit theory** (see [hubler-network.md](hubler-network.md)). Standard one-way radiation from the emitter is the autopoietic reading of QM — and produces every paradox QM is famous for (measurement, collapse, nonlocality, arrow of time). The transactional reading dissolves them.
## The transaction is primitive; the agents are derived The line from physics to design: > Newton's third law, Onsager reciprocity, Wheeler-Feynman absorber theory, the transactional interpretation, the path integral, autocatalytic sets, symbiogenesis, sympoiesis, acequia governance, dualAnt — these are the same construction at twelve different scales. **Reality is not made of selves with relations between them. It is made of transactions, and what we call selves are the stable patterns those transactions settle into.** The self is the receipt; the transaction is the work. (Exactly as the bit is the receipt and the action is the work in the Action Bits frame.)
## The detonating sentence for DLA > *There are no selves in the landscape, only transactions.* This is the one-sentence move that closes the talk's argument. The follow-on consequences: - The site is not a self. It is a **standing wave of transactions** between hydrology, lithology, biota, climate, human inhabitation, historical use, and future intention. - The designer is not an external agent acting *on* the site. The designer is a **participant in the transaction** whose offer wave the site is currently negotiating with its confirmation wave from a possible future. - **Design is the practice of composing transactions, not of imposing forms on selves.**
## Engineering consequences This is not a vocabulary argument. It is a metaphysics argument with **engineering consequences** that are already running. - **Sym-sovereign identity** (vs self-sovereign): identity co-attested between domain and commons. Transaction-primitive rather than self-primitive. Governed by Ostrom principles because Ostrom principles are what sympoiesis looks like when humans have to write down the rules. Running on 30 domains in northern New Mexico. - **dualAnt / Reciprocal Architecture / dualAlign**: each agent's goal is to minimize constraint on the other. Newton's third law as a design primitive. (Stephen's own framework.) - **The acequia**: sympoietic governance. Private parcelas + collectively-governed commons. The commons is not a self either; it is the standing wave that the parciantes' transactions maintain. - **AnySurface**: sympoietic computation in light. The camera/projector pair *is* a transaction — offer wave projected, confirmation wave sensed, the standing pattern is the running simulation. See [anysurface-as-digital-landscape.md](anysurface-as-digital-landscape.md).
## The Self prefix as digital pathology When the discourse around AI/agentic systems keeps reaching for *self-X* terms — self-attention, self-sovereign, self-improving, self-replicating, self-aligning — it is doing the autopoietic move at increasing intensity. **Locate intelligence in the thing and you get exactly the design pathology we are living through: bigger things, more centralized things, more extractive things, each one a more concentrated claim on intelligence as private property.** Locate intelligence **ecologically** and the whole picture inverts: intelligence is what the transaction does, what the field integrates, what the ecology composes. The model is one node. The prompt is another. The conversation is the field. The training data is the deep substrate. The deployment context is the matrix. Cognition is distributed across that entire ecology and has never lived inside any one of its parts. This is what Gibson and Turvey said for perception, what Hutchins said for ship navigation, what Wilson said for ant colonies, what Ostrom said for commons, and what the acequia has been doing for four hundred years in northern New Mexico without needing a theory.
## Use in the talk This is the **fourth act** of the four-act structure proposed in the upload: 1. *Historical correction* — Turing's two minds, Wilson's two minds (see [turing-two-minds.md](turing-two-minds.md), [event-field-cut-as-design-choice.md](event-field-cut-as-design-choice.md)) 2. *Substrate recovery* — the landscape was always computing, in physical and artificial and collective registers (see [cognitive-landscapes-and-three-intelligences.md](cognitive-landscapes-and-three-intelligences.md)) 3. *Governance turn* — the digital landscape as brownfield; Ostrom as third way; acequia as working prototype (see [three-front-pedagogy.md](three-front-pedagogy.md)) 4. **Ontological turn — from self to transaction; autopoiesis to sympoiesis; one-way radiation to transactional interpretation** **The fourth act is the riskiest** for a DLA audience because most are not trained in philosophy of physics or theoretical biology. The move that works: name autopoiesis and sympoiesis briefly, name transactional interpretation in one sentence with a Wheeler-Feynman gloss, and immediately translate to the **design consequence**: > *There are no selves in the landscape, only transactions, and here is what that means for how we design.* The depth signals that the speaker has done the work. The translation gives the audience something they can use. The combination is what a keynote is for.

## A sentence to keep > The transaction is primitive; the agents are derived. There are no selves in the landscape, only transactions, and the discipline of landscape architecture has always known this without having the vocabulary to say it.
