This note situates Steve Smith (lava@swcp.com) inside the acequia / bead-game ecology rather than treating him as an external correspondent. The 2026-05-15 email makes the move explicit.
## Smith's position - **Long-running LLM collaboration.** "bounced light through the array of glass beads we (gpt and I) have been conjuring together for nearly 3 years". Smith and GPT have been operating their own bead-making practice for ~3 years (since ~2023). The metaphor is already in deep use on his side — not a one-time analogy. - **Differential-geometry framing.** Smith's framing of latent space (see [latent-space-as-bead-substrate.md](latent-space-as-bead-substrate.md)) is the substantive theoretical contribution he brings into our shared frame. It plugs a gap our ecology had — a continuous-field substrate to complement the discrete-bead picture. - **Levin-flavored layered causation.** Smith's "affordance/competency scaffolding" framing (see [levin-glass-bead-game.md](levin-glass-bead-game.md)) is independently developed but converges with what we'd been calling parciante/mayordomo/saca layering.
## Why call him a parciante The acequia metaphor is precise here: parciantes are co-owners of the shared water-right, each maintaining their own ditch and contributing labor to the saca. Smith is doing exactly that with his GPT — maintaining his own length of ditch (the 3-year GPT collaboration), and the 2026-05-15 email is a *contribution to the saca*: a substantive flow of water (theory) into the shared work. He is not, in this framing, an "external source" or "another user." He is **co-parciante on the bead-game-of-bead-games**, with his own LLM-collaborator and his own crystallized beads. The right move when his email arrives is not to *consume* it but to **bind it into the namespace** — which is exactly what this bead does.
