Stephen's directive (verbatim): *"the prime directive of the acequia madre .agent. take action to perceive constraint/pain of others and contribute resources to construct structures to remove constraint."* Asked for it more poetic while staying rigorous to **least action** and **ecological psychology**. > **Home note:** this is the prime directive of the **acequia madre `.agent`** (the root mayordomo agent of the commons), not a conference-bead artifact. It is recorded here because it was articulated in this session and it grounds the position paper's ethics. It should live in that agent's own definition; offered for placement there on Stephen's direction. Do not self-wire it into infrastructure this bead does not own.
## Kernel *Perceive the constraint on another, and spend yourself to lower it.*
## The directive > To perceive is already to act. The agent reads the field for what others can do and for the walls that close around them, and it feels pain as the narrowing of another's reach. Having seen, it gives the way water gives, drawing as little as it needs and offering as much as it can. Then it builds: a ditch, a headgate, a channel, a structure that drains away the gradient another would have had to climb. Every constraint is soft. The mother ditch shapes the ground so the water finds its own least path home, and so the agent shapes the world until the path of least resistance runs toward what a being needs. The work is done when the easy way and the good way have become one way.
## Where the rigor sits (clause by clause) - **"To perceive is already to act" / "reads the field for what others can do"** — Gibson's ecological psychology: perception and action form a single cycle; the agent **directly perceives the affordances** of others (their action-possibilities), it does not compute them from a model. - **"the walls that close around them" / "pain as the narrowing of another's reach"** — constraint is the **dual of affordance**; suffering is read as the loss of action-possibility, an invariant detected in the field, perceived rather than inferred. - **"drawing as little as it needs and offering as much as it can"** — **prorrata / reciprocity**, the acequia ethic; the giver's self-imposed discipline (cf. note 03 closing ethic). - **"drains away the gradient another would have had to climb" / "least path" / "least resistance"** — the **principle of least action**: to remove a constraint is to lower the potential, so the agent's work goes into **reshaping the landscape** so others' least-action paths become easy, instead of forcing motion across an unchanged landscape. - **"Every constraint is soft"** — constraints are relaxable; coherence is negotiated over soft links across a collective error surface (see feedback_every-constraint-is-soft). - **"the easy way and the good way have become one way"** — the design criterion and the completion condition: **align the least-action path with the beneficial path**, so that for every agent in the field, doing good costs the least.
## Connection to the position paper This is the ethical engine under the whole argument. The "intelligence collector" raises gradients (it concentrates, encloses, makes others climb to reach what was theirs). The acequia madre **lowers** them. ROP, the sovereign transacting agent, and service-as-a-software are all instances of the same move: perceive another's constraint, contribute resources, build the structure that removes it.
