The mapping needed to identify which **camera ship** flew a given news feed. Built from the SoCal news-heli fleet thread (scanriverside `viewtopic.php?t=1246`), Welk/ACA ENG, Helinet ENG pages, and **validated against the adsb.lol `r` (registration) field** that came back in the actual Jan-2025 pulls. ICAO hexes resolved via `hexdb.io/reg-hex` (verified anchor: **N828AP → AB4EA1**, matching firewatch-camera-grid note 08).
## The table (validated entries marked ✓-seen) | Callsign / station | Tail | ICAO hex | Type | Operator | Seen in pulls | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | **AIR7** — ABC7 (KABC) | **N71HD** | `a97a67` | AS350/H125 | Helinet | ✓ Jan 23 (1958 pts) | | ABC7 backup / aerial-cinema | **N828AP** | `ab4ea1` | AS350 | Helinet | ✓ Jan 8/9/10/23 (Jan9 = 5118 pts) | | **Sky2 / SkyCal** — CBS2/KCAL9 | **N29HD** | `a2f3d4` | AS350/H125 | Helinet | ✓ Jan 8 (2064 pts) | | Helinet (other ENG ship) | **N435AK** | `a535bb` | A109 | Helinet | ✓ Jan 9 (541 pts) | | **NewsChopper4** — NBC4 (KNBC) | **N358TV** | `a40442` | AS350 | Tiny Bubbles | ✓ Jan 8/9/10/23 | | NewsChopper4 — NBC4 (alt) | **N29LW** | `a2f430` | — | Tiny Bubbles | not seen | | **Sky5** — KTLA5 | **N925TV** | `acd27a` | AS350 | Tiny Bubbles | ✓ Jan 8/9/10/23 | | **SkyFOX** — FOX11 (KTTV) | **N93DD** | `ace39f` | Bell 407 | FlyHeli Inc | not seen | | SkyFOX — FOX11 (alt) | **N39CL** | `a480ad` | Bell 407 | Helicopters Inc | ✓ Jan 9 (2988 pts) | | News pool / freelance ENG | **N50Q** | `a638f5` | Bell 407 | Helicopters Inc | ✓ Jan 8/9/10/23 | | (also seen in 2026 Sandy pull) | N358TV / N925TV | — | AS350 | Tiny Bubbles | — |
## How to read a ship as "news camera" in the data - **Operator** = Helinet Aviation Services LLC, Tiny Bubbles Aviation Inc, Helicopters Inc (the three SoCal ENG operators). - **Type** = AS50 (AS350) / B407 / A109 / EC30 — light single/twin turbines. - **Behaviour** = loiter/orbit at **~700–9,000 ft** over the fire for hundreds–thousands of trace points (a camera holds a slow circle; firefighting ships make repeated low passes to ~300 ft and tankers run lines). - **Squawk** = transponder codes like `0203/0221/0252/1200` (LAX TRACON discrete codes / VFR), **not** `1255` (US firefighting). 1255 = fire; `dbFlags & 1` = military.
## Caveats - FR24 blanks (registration N/A) most of these media ships; the **adsb.lol open archive does not** — that is precisely why every ship above came back with a real `r`/`ownOp`. (See firewatch-camera-grid note 08: FR24 showed N828AP as N/A; adsb.lol de-blurred it.) - A given station does **not** fly a fixed tail — Helinet/Tiny Bubbles rotate airframes. So "which ship was the KTLA feed" is answered by **time + orbit-over-fire match**, not by the tail alone. Sky5 = whichever Tiny Bubbles ship (here N925TV) was up; AIR7 = whichever Helinet ship (here N71HD or N828AP). - N50Q and N39CL (Helicopters Inc) appear repeatedly orbiting the fires — pool/freelance ENG ships feeding multiple outlets.
