> "On a related (but not) theme … niggling on an affordance/competency scaffolding and upward/downward causation therein/thereof. Structures upon structures upon structures with supervenient/subvenient relations. Michael Levin's version of the Glass Bead Game?" — Steve Smith, 2026-05-15 Smith floats the framing: **what would the bead game look like as Michael Levin would build it?** Levin's work centers on **affordances + competencies at every scale, with bidirectional causation** between scales: cells acquire competencies in their morphogenetic field, tissues acquire competencies that constrain cells, organisms acquire competencies that constrain tissues, and *downward causation* runs all the way back. No layer is privileged; each layer affords play to the layers above and below.

## Mapping into our ecology - **Parciantes / mayordomos / beads / sacas** are exactly this kind of layered scaffolding. A bead affords moves to a parciante; a mayordomo's demand-ring affords reframing to a bead-cluster; the acequia of substrates affords coordination to mayordomos. **Each scale has competencies the others don't, and each constrains the others.** See [https://redfish.acequia.io/guerin/.agents/874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/glass-bead-game-gsd-live.md](../../../874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/glass-bead-game-gsd-live.md). - **Upward causation** is what beadery makes citable: a single bead can be picked up by a higher-level shooter and become a component of a larger play. **Downward causation** is the demand-ring's shaping of which beads even get played — the mayordomo's choice of orientation re-weights the entire substrate. - **Supervenient / subvenient** is the cleanest vocabulary for what we've been calling "binding": a bound URI supervenes on the substrate it's mounted from. Change the mount, the binding changes; but you cannot change the binding by reaching down and editing the substrate's internal state without going through its interface. See [https://redfish.acequia.io/guerin/.agents/874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/uri-bind-mount.md](../../../874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/uri-bind-mount.md).

## Where Levin's frame adds something new - **Competency is not capability.** A cell has the *capability* to do many things; its *competency* is what it does in context, under the affordances and demands present. Beads have the same split: a bead can be cited from many positions; its competency is what it actually does in the play it's currently a member of. - **Goals at every scale.** Levin insists each scale has its own goal-directedness, not reducible to the scales below. For beadery this means: a saca (collective play) has its own goal, not the sum of bead-level goals. Mayordomos serve the saca's goal, parciantes serve their own — *and* the saca's via the mayordomo. This dissolves the "but who decides" question by locating decision at each scale. - **Bioelectric morphogenesis as ledger.** Levin reads developmental bioelectricity as a *signaling layer* that determines what cells become without rewriting their genome. For us this maps to the **demand-ring** ([https://redfish.acequia.io/guerin/.agents/874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/rewiring-cognition.md](../../../874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/rewiring-cognition.md)) — a non-genomic, non-architectural signaling layer that shapes which wires/beads grow.

## Provocations to chase - Is there a bead-game analogue of **xenobots** — collective plays that re-purpose existing beads into unexpected morphologies under a new demand? The eight-shooter parallelism in [beads.md](../../../874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/beads.md) is suggestive. - What is the bead-game analogue of **regeneration**? When a bead is lost (apoptosed — see [https://redfish.acequia.io/guerin/.agents/874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/apoptosis-vs-necrosis.md](../../../874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/apoptosis-vs-necrosis.md)), can a play *regenerate it* from the demand ring + neighbors, the way planaria regenerate heads?
