> "This image is of a spherical glass model of the known adjacent universes already recognized if not yet explored by the American Nazis." — Steve Smith, 2026-05-15 In Steve Smith's reading of *Man in the High Castle*, the show's spherical glass-bead model of alternate histories is not just plot prop. It is a **physical-symbolic instance of the bead game**: a discrete, lit-up lattice standing in for a continuous space of possible worlds, with an explorer (the Nazis, in-fiction; us, in life) wandering paths between the visible beads. The image collides three of our own framings: - **Beadery** — beads as crystallized plays, the game-board as a lattice of citable artifacts. See [https://redfish.acequia.io/guerin/.agents/874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/glass-bead-game-gsd-live.md](../../../874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/glass-bead-game-gsd-live.md). - **Adjacent possible** — only the *adjacent* worlds are reachable from here; the rest of the multiverse is unmodeled and ungrasped. See [adjacent-possible-and-bead-game.md](adjacent-possible-and-bead-game.md). - **Polarized GETs** — each bead in the sphere is an *agent at a URI*; activating it (looking at it, fetching it, asking what it contains) lights up a path. See [https://redfish.acequia.io/guerin/.agents/874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/polarized-links.md](../../../874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/polarized-links.md).
## What the image gives us - A **shape** for the local namespace of adjacent worlds: spherical, lit, finite, citable. - A **failure mode**: the worlds *not yet explored* are present-but-dark — the lattice extends beyond competence. - A **player**: the explorer is not the game-board; the game-board affords play to the explorer. Levin-flavored — see [levin-glass-bead-game.md](levin-glass-bead-game.md).
## What it does not give us - Continuous topology between worlds (the glass beads are discrete pearls; the field is implicit). Smith's complementary framing — **LLM latent space as the continuous co-carved manifold** — fills that gap. See [latent-space-as-bead-substrate.md](latent-space-as-bead-substrate.md).
