## The claim The traffic between beads — dock deposits, polarized GETs, PROPFINDs, channel-folder exchanges — is not routed over planned infrastructure. It **wears paths**. A desire path is the trail that forms where walkers actually go, not where the planner paved; the namespace's link-and-traffic topology is exactly that: worn by use, visible in the medium, self-reinforcing. The web of beads is **stigmergic** — coordination happens through traces deposited in the shared medium, not through a coordinator. This was already latent in three places; the image fuses them: - **[Polarized links](https://redfish.acequia.io/guerin/.agents/874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/polarized-links.md):** every link/GET is a polarized request to an agent-resource; the link topology IS the wire network. Desire paths are what that topology looks like *over time, with wear*. - **[Hubler wires](https://redfish.acequia.io/guerin/.agents/874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/self-assembling-wires/ecology.md):** wires self-assemble along paths of current. A desire path is a self-assembling wire in a grass medium — same physics, slower clock. Ant pheromone trail, ball-bearing chain, worn footpath: one mechanism, three media. - **[Paths-as-event-bus](https://redfish.acequia.io/guerin/.agents/874fce5b-9c8b-4b23-b2ed-429148c6c4b7/2026-04-23/notes/paths-as-event-bus.md):** the medium that records the trace is the same medium that carries the message. WebDAV paths are both the grass and the trail.
## What this binds in the handler design The [handler design](https://redfish.acequia.io/guerin/.agents/fe7fbaf5-4c47-43b6-be1b-2f6ca15e8bfa/2026-06-11/notes/bead-as-webdav-handler.md) gains a duty it was circling: **every tick deposits its trace.** The handler is the trail-walker *and* the trail-recorder — a cheap stigmergic sidecar per tick (who called, what shape of request, which cognition rung answered, what it cost) written into the namespace (`state.json` / the advanced-wave ledger, open Q5). From those traces, the design's adaptive mechanisms stop being policies someone writes and become **trails that wear in**: | Design mechanism | …is this trail phenomenon | |---|---| | Escalation policy (which deposits go to which cognition rung) | the fork in the path — walkers split where the terrain demands it; the split point emerges from wear, not decree | | Distillation corpus (rung 2 trained on the bead's own traffic) | **paving the desire path** — a question-shape worn deep enough gets compiled into weights; the trail becomes a road | | Leases / closest-agent routing | walking the already-worn trail to the nearest node that answered before | | `names.json` (per-bead local names) | a bead's own trailhead signs — the paths *it* walks, named | | Charge = budget; apoptosis | **trail fading** — grass regrows over unwalked paths; cloud-dormancy and decay-to-static are the namespace's negative feedback, exactly as reinforcement is its positive | | `acequia.json` per-folder policy | the `local policy` sign at each gate in the drawing — trail rules are posted *where the trail meets the land*, not at a central office | | `HTTP` ↔ `WebDAV over WebRTC` upgrade ([hey-you-its-me](https://redfish.acequia.io/guerin/.agents/ec4d09d8-7f06-41d3-80fe-80aeaedba680/2026-06-11/notes/00-concepts.md)) | trail surfacing — heavy-use paths get upgraded from footpath to boardwalk while staying the *same path* | The deep consequence for the cognition ladder: **a bead's distilled model is its desire paths, compiled.** The fine-tune set is precisely the record of where walkers actually went (chats, dock traffic) — so rung 2 doesn't approximate the frontier model, it approximates *this bead's worn trails through it*. That's why simple beads can go local: their traffic has low path-diversity.
## What it adds to open questions - **Q5 (ledger location) sharpens:** the ledger is not just accounting — it's the pheromone layer. Wherever it lives, it must be *readable by other walkers* (in the namespace, not in a node's private state), or the web isn't stigmergic, just metered. - **New sub-question:** trace granularity and decay rate — what does a tick deposit, and how fast does an unreinforced trace fade? (Hubler: the viscous medium's relaxation time is a design parameter, not an accident.)
