This note carries **Stephen's preferred proper name** for the discipline-as-recomposed, and the **three-intelligences taxonomy** that gives the recomposition its structure. It also names the *title-hack* — the two readings of "Digital Landscape Architecture" that detonate the conference's own framing on first sentence.
## The title hack The three-word phrase **Digital Landscape Architecture** has two readings, and the audience defaults to one without noticing: - **As instrument** (default): *the digital, in service of landscape architecture*. Computational tools, GIS, parametric workflows, simulations — all serving the human discipline. - **As object**: *the digital landscape itself, requiring architectural intervention*. The substrate of intelligence — physical, artificial, collective — that has become its own designed territory. Same three words. Opposite ontology. The audience will not have seen the second reading coming, and once they see it they cannot unsee it. The talk hinges on this reading-flip. **Computational landscape architecture pushing the envelope** is the verb-mode statement of the second reading: the discipline stepping forward to design the substrate it has been treating as backdrop. But the *proper name* for the recomposed practice is sharper: **cognitive landscapes**, with **landscape intelligence** as the field-of-study name.
## Three intelligences Cognition is not located in any one thing. It is distributed across an ecology of three computational registers that have always been co-present in landscape but were severed by Cartesian individuation and then re-fragmented across academic disciplines: ### 1. Physical intelligence — the landscape running 1952 The site computing itself in real-time, at full resolution, for free: - Reaction-diffusion at landscape scale: tiger-bush vegetation banding (Niger, Somalia), fairy circles (Namibia), peatland hummocks, riparian vegetation mosaics, savanna tree spacing under fire regime - Hydrology finding its level (drainage basins, meander frequencies, river capture) - Soils computing filtration, succession, mineral cycling - Fire finding its fuel and pathway - Climate as planetary heat-engine + water-cycle solver This is the second Turing's domain. Artificial intelligence — the discrete machine running 1936 The symbolic, auditable, **inter-subjectively verifiable** machine: - CAD, GIS, parametric modeling, BIM - Numerical solvers, hydrology equation models (HEC-RAS) - Agent-based modeling on screen - Machine-learning classifiers, computer vision pipelines - Large language models, generative imagery This is the first Turing's domain. Computation as **receipt** — the work has to be legible to other humans, across offices and decades. The bit is the receipt; the program is the audit trail; the file format is the protocol for intersubjective verification. ### 3. Collective intelligence — the superorganism, the colony, the commons Many agents transacting through a continuous substrate that integrates, decays, and biases future transactions: - Ant colonies — Wilson's superorganism (see [event-field-cut-as-design-choice.md](event-field-cut-as-design-choice.md)) - Stigmergic systems — discrete particle agents in continuous pheromone fields - Desire lines — humans laying down stigmergic trails over decades - Acequia governance — 400-year-old water commons, parciantes governing through ditch + ledger - Ostrom's eight design principles — the empirical regularities of working commons across centuries and continents - Distributed cognition (Hutchins) — ship navigation as a property of the navigation team + instruments + ship + sea - The internet at its participatory best — the Era-3 stigmergic-agentic web Computation as **governed transaction** — discrete agent actions integrate into continuous field memory; field memory biases future actions; the loop is closed by social or technical governance.
## What the three look like together The pathology of the current digital landscape: **one of the three (artificial, in its centralized capitalist mode) has been allowed to colonize the matrix and starve the other two.** Cloud-hosted AI extracts from physical landscapes (sensor data feeds platform models) and dissolves collective intelligence (the platform replaces the commons, the user is sharecropper). The dominance is not accidental — it is the consequence of an autopoietic ontology ([sympoiesis-over-autopoiesis.md](sympoiesis-over-autopoiesis.md)) that locates intelligence in objects rather than transactions. The design intervention is to **recompose all three into a working ecology**, with the discipline of landscape architecture doing the composing because no other discipline has the literacy to read all three at once.
## Why the proper name is *cognitive landscapes* Not *computational landscape architecture* — that name still locates the verb in the architect, leaving the landscape as object. Not *intelligent landscape* — that's the autopoietic phrasing, smuggling the self in. **Cognitive landscapes** names the *property of the ecology*, not the property of the architect or the site. Cognition is distributed across the standing wave of transactions. The phrase is symmetric: cognition is happening in the landscape, of which the architect is one participant. And **landscape intelligence** is the name of the field-of-study that takes this seriously — the field whose practitioners can read all three intelligences and compose them deliberately. It is the discipline that landscape architecture is in the process of becoming.
