## The physics reference Wheeler-Feynman absorber theory (1945, 1949) reformulated classical electrodynamics using half-retarded-half-advanced Green's function solutions. A charge doesn't only radiate forward in time (retarded wave); it also emits an advanced wave that propagates backward from future absorbers. What we observe as radiation reaction emerges from the coupled emitter-absorber interaction. The key move: **emission and absorption are not separate events. They are one four-dimensional event with structure in both time directions.** The absorber's existence is required for the emitter's radiation to cohere. You cannot radiate into a universe with no future absorbers; the advanced-wave response is what makes the emission consistent.

## Application to the ecology In the commons, the same structural pair holds: - **Value flows one way (retarded wave):** upstream → downstream. A binding, a deploy, an authored artifact, a completed task. This is the forward-in-time propagation. - **{Reputation, attention, wealth} flow the other way (advanced wave):** downstream → upstream. These are the absorber's acknowledgment, temporally later but structurally coupled to the same emission event. **A binding is not two transactions (value out, acknowledgment in). It is one transaction with two faces.** Ledgering them separately discards the coupling and is how most modern value systems produce asymmetric outcomes — attention accumulates downstream at sinks while authors upstream go uncompensated. The physical frame says: this is a bookkeeping mistake, not a market failure. The two sides were always one event.

## Three channels of advanced-wave flow The downstream → upstream acknowledgment is not a single quantity. It has at least three separable channels: | Channel | Character | Accumulation | Conversion | |---|---|---|---| | **Reputation** | Slow, durable, context-transferable | Builds over many transactions; changes the emitter's standing in the ecology | Can be partly cashed out to attention or wealth; not arbitrarily | | **Attention** | Fast, ephemeral, immediate | Per-transaction signal; "someone is looking now" | Bandwidth-limited per observer; plentiful in aggregate; converts to reputation slowly | | **Wealth** | Transactional, fungible, explicit | Requires accounting machinery (ledger entries, signatures, transfers) | Directly convertible to most things; directly generated by explicit contracts | All three are modes of absorber-response. Each can be ledgered independently. Each can be exchanged for the others on non-trivial terms (reputation → wealth is how consulting works; attention → reputation is how reputation accrues; wealth → attention is how advertising works). An ecology with machinery to track all three is self-accounting in the full Feynman-Wheeler sense.

## Consequences for ledger design - **Every binding or deploy emits two ledger-sides, coupled.** One entry captures the value-delivered face AND the acknowledgment-received face (across all three channels where applicable). Not two rows; one row with bidirectional shape. - **Without absorbers, emission lacks coherence.** Open-source work with no adoption doesn't just "fail to be valuable" — it lacks the advanced-wave response that would give its emitter dynamic identity. Interpretation: authors need audiences for their work to cohere into themselves as authors. This is not a motivational observation; it's structural. - **Absorber-response shapes emitter dynamics over time.** If downstream consumers reject or ignore a direction, the upstream author's future work reflects that. The field reconfigures. This is why the ecology is not a broadcast medium but a coupled feedback system. - **Ledger disputes are advanced-wave discrepancies.** When reputation/attention/wealth don't track the value delivered (uncompensated labor, stolen credit, misattributed work), the system is in a state where retarded and advanced components don't match. That's the signal to correct. - **Credit flows recursively up the chain.** Downstream's advanced-wave response flows to upstream, which in turn is downstream to further-upstream; credit propagates along the emission chain. Attribution at each level gets a share, not a monolithic assignment.

## Connection to Hubler / self-assembling wires Both waves are visible in the experiment: - **Retarded wave:** charge moving through the conduit toward the ring. Value delivered. - **Advanced wave:** the field gradient itself, which exists *because* the ring absorber exists. Without the negative-potential electrode, no conduit forms. The absorber's presence is a backward-propagating constraint that shapes what the emitter can do. - **Coupled:** the wire network forms and persists only because both waves are active simultaneously. Remove either (isolate the bearings, or remove the ring) and the structure dissolves. The 22/22/56 topological invariants are a fixed point of both waves in equilibrium: the branching geometry where forward charge flow and backward field gradient balance.

## Connection to acequia The acequia governance tradition always ledgered both directions. Parciantes receive water (retarded wave) and contribute back in saca labor, reciprocal obligation, and reputational standing (advanced wave). The multi-generational records aren't water-usage logs alone; they're coupled emission-absorption records. Modern systems that separate "usage tracking" from "compensation tracking" (i.e., almost all of them) inherit the one-wave mis-modeling. Centuries of acequia practice is evidence that bidirectional ledgering is practical at human scale with paper records, mayordomos, and community accountability.

## Consequences for the four horizontal substrates - **Acequia** is the ledger substrate; it must natively support bidirectional transaction records with all three advanced-wave channels. - **Agentscript** is the transform substrate; its transforms must include the advanced-wave response as first-class side effects of forward transforms. A transform that only changes state without capturing the coupled acknowledgment is incomplete. - **Realtime.earth** applies the frame spatially: when a sensor streams data (value out), attention/reputation/wealth flow back to the sensor's operator. - **Dual.space** is literally a duality between emitter and absorber across spaces — cameras in Room A emit into projectors in Room B; attention from Room B's occupants is the advanced-wave response that shapes what Room A chooses to show.

## When to invoke this frame - Any ledger or accounting design: check that both wave components are in the schema - Any "open source sustainability" discussion: the one-wave mis-modeling is the root problem - Any "we should charge for this / we shouldn't charge for this" dilemma: the question is malformed if you haven't already modeled the full advanced-wave response (of which wealth is only one channel) - Any attribution or citation mechanism design: that IS the advanced-wave ledger - Any "why does this work need users?" question: without absorbers, no coherent emission - Any mayordomo dispute-resolution design: the mayordomo is checking wave-coupling consistency, not one-sided accounting

## Practical pointers for implementation - **Bidirectional ledger schema:** each transaction record has a `value` face (retarded) and an `acknowledgment` face (advanced, with sub-fields for reputation, attention, wealth channels). - **Attention counter at every resource:** `GET` counts, reads, observers attached to a path. Cheap, ambient, always-on. Aggregates as proto-reputation. - **Reputation as signed assertions:** other parciantes sign "I used this / I benefited / I recommend" records that accumulate at the upstream resource's URI. Reputation is a bound subtree of such signatures. - **Wealth as explicit transactions:** a wealth transfer references both a resource URI and a reason. Out-of-band settlement (invoices, bank) is fine; on-ledger is better for transparency. - **Mayordomos arbitrate wave-coupling:** they check that advanced-wave response is propagating consistently and intervene when it isn't.
